PRIVACY POLICY
SECURE ORDERING
Your privacy is very important to us. The following document outlines how we protect your privacy on this Site:
COLLECTION AND USE OF YOUR INFORMATION
When You Register
In order to register on the Site, we require that you provide us with a username, e-mail address and password. Only your username is viewable by others visiting the Site. You are never required to provide your real name to us unless you become a member, in which case, we collect your name, address, and billing information. Even then, this information is used only for internal purposes and to send you your rewards, and is never presented on the Site. You have the option, but never the requirement, to post biographical information about yourself as well as your picture on the Site. If you choose to provide your biographical information and/or your picture, it will become viewable by other members on this Site.
When You "Surf" the Site
Like most standard website servers, we use and maintain the information that we obtain from your browser on our server logs. This information can include Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, browser type, Internet Service Provider (ISP), and other data. We may use this information to analyze trends, administer the Site, track user movement in the aggregate, and gather broad demographic information for aggregate use. We may associate this information with your personal information to resolve technical issues and support security for our users.
Cookies
A cookie is a small piece of data that is stored in a browser-related file on your computer's hard drive when you use the Site. Cookies are uniquely assigned to your computer, and are read by a webserver in the domain that issued the cookie to you. Our primary use of cookies is to improve your experience on our website. For example, storing a cookie on your computer allows you to login without typing your username and password each time. We also use cookies to maintain the records of which poems you have posted on the Site, which poems you have reviewed, your level of accomplishment (your title on the Site), and your point values.
When You Become a Member
If you choose to become a member, you will need to provide us with certain contact information, including your name, e-mail address, and billing address. We also require other information necessary to process your payment, such as a credit card number and expiration date. When you purchase a membership, you are consenting to our delivery of this information to our service providers, which may include banks and credit card companies that we use to process the transaction.
We may use information that you provide to tell you about carefully screened products which we feel may be of interest to you. Also, we may share our mailing list (your name and physical address) and your general shopping activity information with a few select companies whose products and services are similar to ours. We do this because most of our customers enjoy being introduced to new or value oriented products/services. In addition, we sometimes use e-mail addresses to contact visitors who communicate with us. For example, we send e-email to visitors, who provide us with their e-mail addresses for specific purposes, such as our regular newsletter with topic of interest relating to poetry, providing information about promotions, or responding to an inquiry.
When You Communicate with Other Members
To ensure the privacy of our members, we do not display or give out your e-mail address or any other contact information on our Site. We use a message center that uses a "double-blind" e-mail system, which hides the e-mail addresses to protect the privacy of both the sender and receiver. When using the message center, it is up to you to choose whether you are comfortable disclosing your e-mail address or any other contact information to others through private communications.
When You Post Your Poetry or Review a Poem
Your submitted poetry, other individuals' reviews of your poetry and the reviews you give to other poets’ poetry are displayed publicly, so please exercise care in deciding what information you wish to disclose.
When You Use the "Tell-A-Friend" Feature
If you elect to use our referral service for informing a friend about our Site, you will be asked to provide your friend's name and e-mail address. We will then automatically send the friend a one-time e-mail inviting them to visit the Site. We ask for this information for the sole purpose of sending this one-time e-mail and tracking the success of our referral program.
Changing or Correcting Your Information
We provide you with ways in which you can update your information. You may change such information as your name, age, mailing address, e-mail address and password and payment information, and you can edit your photos and biographical information as well. You may have your membership removed from the Site for any reason at any time.
If for any reason you do not wish to receive communications from Poets.com or from affiliated third-party merchants or any interested third parties from whom we think you may want to receive information, just tell us. Contact us through the "contact us" section of this site. Also, we provide a direct link for you to easily opt out of our various e-mail promotions that provide information about the special opportunities we offer at the bottom of those e-mails.
The Security of Your Information
We have instituted physical, electronic and procedural safeguards to store and maintain your information in a highly secure environment. For example, when highly confidential information, such as a credit card number, is transmitted through our website, it is encrypted by using Secure Socket Layer (SSL) software. Verisign provides authentication that you are communicating over a secure connection with poets.com. You are also required to use a password to access certain pages on the Site where your information can be changed or deleted. This security safeguard is intended to prevent someone else from making choices about the usage and control of your information. It is therefore important for you to protect against unauthorized access to your password and to your computer by ensuring you logoff when you are finished visiting the Site from a shared computer. You take full responsibility for maintaining the confidentiality of your password.
As Poets.com and its affiliates continue to explore new business opportunities, it may need to, and reserves the right to transfer and assign customer contact and site usage information collected on the Site to one or more affiliated and unaffiliated entities as part of a business transaction.
If you have any questions about our privacy policy or information security, you can contact Poets.com's customer service through the "contact us" section of the Site or by writing to us at Poets.com Customer Service, 3600 Crondall Lane, Suite 100, Owings Mills, MD 21117.
Changes to Our Privacy Policy
We may update this policy from time to time as our information practices are modified or changed. We encourage you to periodically review this page for the latest information on our privacy practices.
